巨匠ヴェルディ亡き後オペラの世界は、貴族社会や神話を舞台にしたものから一般の人々による現実の物語を題材にしたものへと変化していきます。中でもプッチーニ は独特の美しいメロディーで可憐なヒロインを描くことで、「ラ・ボエーム」「トスカ」そしてこの「蝶々夫人」など多くの名作を残しました。 　明治初期の日本を舞台にしたこの作品は、小説から芝居へと形を変え、それを見たプッチーニがぜひ作曲したいと言い出してオペラになったものです。このオペラのヒロイン蝶々さんは、決して異国人の夫に裏切られて絶望するかよわい日本女性ではありません。過酷な運命の中でひたすら愛を貫いていく気高さが描ききられているからこそ、世界中の人々の胸を打つのです。 　またこのオペラの中には、「さくらさくら」「お江戸日本橋」「君が代」などの日本のメロディーや、アメリカ国歌までもが効果的に使われています。
Madama Butterfly is an opera in 2 acts, libretto by Luigi Illica (prose text) and Giuseppe Giacosa (verses), based on the play 'Madame Butterfly' by David Belasco after a story by John Luther Long, a selection of traditional japanese melodies rearranged for western orchestras by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) and of course his own music added too, first performed 17th February 1904 at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan. Puccini also makes use of the american national anthem.
Pinkerton buys a young geisha girl, Cio-Cio-San [Butterfly] from Goro. They get married but he is not serious about this marriage. He wants a one-night stand. She is serious. After the ceremony Uncle Bonzo arrives and denounces her for marrying a man from overseas. After a passionate night with Butterfly, Pinkerton leaves and many years pass whilst Cio-Cio-San gives birth to his son.
Cio-Cio-San remains faithful and refuses to believe that Pinkerton has dumped her. Sharpless pays a visit bringing a letter from Pinkerton telling her he's married an American wife but he doesn`t get round to telling her the this because she keeps on interupting him. Pinkerton and his new wife Kate arrive to ask permission to take away Cio-Cio-San's son on the grounds that he will have a better life in America; she kills herself with same knife her father used to commit suicide.
